18TH CENTURY EMBROIDERY TECHNIQUES
by Gail Marsh
During
the 18th century, embroidery reached an excellence never
really surpassed in terms of variety, by any other
period in history. It was an exciting time for
embroiderers and therefore for us to look back on. This
exquisite book brims with information on the stitches,
ornate embellishments and striking designs that were
characteristic of 18th century embroidery. It features
beautiful illustrations and color photographs of an
incredible array of museum-held 18th century costume
pieces and, with quotes and extracts taken from 18th
century journals and articles, provides a fascinating
insight into the importance that was placed on suitable
attire.
It includes:
- an illustrated account of 18th century needleworking
tools
-an insight into the working life of 18th century
embroiderers
-descriptions of 18th century embroidered garments
(including information on the particular embroidery
techniques used, as well as the stitched and threads)
-the following embroidery techniques discussed in
detail:
- Metal thread and spangles
- Silk embroidery
- Quilting
- Whitework
- Tambour and chain stitch
- Crewel
- Novelty threads
- Hollie Point and Knotting
