SUBVERSIVE CROSS STITCH: 33
DESIGNS FOR YOUR SURLY SIDE
by Julie Jackson
In this wicked little book,
Julie Jackson reinvents the age old craft of cross stitch, by
putting an end to some of the saccharine sentimentalism seen
on so many pieces, and giving modern stitchers a chance to say
what's really on their minds. Stitch up "IRONY IS NOT DEAD"
for a literary friend. Spread holiday cheer with the festive
BITE ME, or THIS PLACE SUCKS for a cherished co-worker. This
fully illustrated books includes 33 of Jackson's best (and
naughtiest) patterns with simple, easy-to-follow instructions.
The simple tools and techniques needed are well illustrated
and described, and she also offers encouragement and tips on
how to create one-of-a-kind revolutionary designs.

On This Fair
Sampler Does My Needle Write
An
Exhibition at Witney Antiques
October 11-30,2004
The title of this exhibition comes
from the verse on a sampler sewn
by Mary Bishop in 1838. Included
in the exhibit are samplers from
the collection of Emma Henriette
Schiff von Suvero. At the outbreak
of World War II, this unique
collection was seized by the
Nazis, and was left in the care of
the Staatlich Kunstgewerbe museum,
in Vienna. The samplers were
stored there until 2003, when
restitution was made by the
Austrian government. (Scarlet
Letter: we aren't certain to whom
restitution was made) This
exhibition includes both English
and Continental samplers, which,
since its dispersal in November
2003, has not been seen since it
was collected almost a century
ago. $31.00

SAMPLERS: AN EXCEPTIONAL ENDEAVOR
This newest exhibition catalogue
from Witney Antiques features many samplers with a Scottish
connection. (The exhibition runs from 13 October- 1st
November, 2003.) They were made by girls from the Highlands,
lowlands, small villages, hamlets and towns. The exhibit
includes English samplers, serving as an interesting
comparison with their Scottish neighbors. One of the unique
features of Scottish samplers is that they often contain an
abundance of family initials, leaving valuable clues as to the
identity of the embroideress and her family, even if the piece
is unsigned and undated.
This softbound catalogue is illustrated in full color, with
over 45 antique samplers never before published. $32.00
