HOW FRAGRANT THE ROSE:
Samplers and Historic Embroideries
1650-1850 This is another beautiful exhibition catalogue just published by Witney Antiques, the theme of which has been taken from a popular verse found on both British and American samplers, written by the Rev. Isaac Watts. The English love of flowers is reflected in the outstanding embroideries which feature in this exhibition. Never before published color photographs of extraordinary samplers, from 17th century spot motif, whitework and band samplers to 19th century pictorial samplers, are featured. Full color, 53 illustrations, softbound, 48 pages, $30.00

BED
RUGS: 18TH AND EARLY 19TH CENTURY EMBROIDERED BED COVERS
by Jessie
MarshallThese great shaggy American bed covers were stitched with
hand-spun, natural dyed yarn on handwoven woolen or linen
backgrounds employing large, fanciful, floral or geometric
designs in a wide variety of colors. Stitches used
included loop pile running stitch, darning stitch, stem,
outline, and several knot type stitches. This book
contains many line drawings of stitches and patterns and
describes the history of bed rugs, including known
examples and makers, and where they can be seen. One
chapter explains how to make a bed rug. Other types
of embroidered bed covers are also discussed.
Softbound, 124 pages, well illustrated, $18.00
