Alte Mustertucjer zum Nachsticken (Old Samplers from the 17th-19th Century, Charted for Reproduction),
by Angelika Walter.
Alte Mustertucjer zum Nachsticken (Old Samplers from the 17th-19th Century, Charted for Reproduction), by Angelika Walter
A book of charted graphs of eight entire samplers, with excellent color photos of the antique originals with the reproductions, and text in both German and English. The graphs and instructions for eight complete samplers are very well done, and the choice of samplers is superb (very unusual and lovely designs). The earliest sampler is dated 1679, and features Sibmacher's famous stag motif amongst gorgeous flowers, and an extensive cityscape. Others include a pictorial Nuremberg sampler of 1717, one from Schleswig-Holstein dated 1779, a northern German sampler of 1815 with a lovely shepherdess and other significant figures, an unusual sampler of 1819 from Sulzbach-Rosenberg with lovely solidly cross stitched vignettes of architectural scenes, and a wonderfully bold red and blue northern German sampler of 1843 packed with symbolic motifs. Highly recommended! 152 pages, hardbound, $40.00

Old Italian Patterns for Linen Embroidery, collected and analyzed by Frieda Lipperheide,
translated and edited by Kathleen Epstein

Old Italian Patterns for Linen EmbroideryThis attractive large hardbound folio is a new version of the original 1892 edition. This volume was one of the first investigations into the relationship between embroidery designs and stitches of the early European Renaissance and their antecedents in the middle east. Most interesting are the 85 patterns illustrated on 30 separate large plates, with stitch diagrams, and many photographs from original early Italian textiles. Hardbound folio, black and white, 63 pages, $40.00

PUNTO ASSISI
Collected and charted by Alida Becchetti, text by Silvana Toppetti

While the introduction to this marvelous collection of traditional Assisi patterns is in Italian, the majority of the book consists of the patterns themselves: wonderful patterns lost in time, which I've never seen reproduced elsewhere. I found the book in a small bookshop in Assisi (Umbria, Italy) last summer, and was finally able to track down the publisher and have it imported. Softbound, 79 pages, $29.00

HERE BE WYVERNS: Hundreds of Patterns Graphed from Medieval Sources,

by Nancy Spies
This is probably the best collection of early documented patterns we've seen since The New Carolingian Modelbook went out of print years ago. Included are chapters on animals, lettering, borders, human figures, water creatures, mythological creatures, birds, and odds and ends: over 400 in all. The patterns have been clearly graphed for cross stitch embroidery.
Spiral bound, 192 pages, $30.00
