ANIMALS EMBROIDERIES AND PATTERNS
by Raffaella Serena

BOOKCOVER OF RAFAELLA SERENA'S ANIMALS EMBROIDERIES AND PATTERNS The discovery of the Nowotny collection in Vienna brings us a collection that is unique both in quality and quantity of the patterns. It is also a comprehensive record of some of the most refined and elegant creations of the 19th century.

In the history of embroidery, the 19th century occupies a very special place. Not only did it coincide with the most popular period in this time-honoured art but is also happened to be the century in which embroidery gave full expression to the ideal of femininity.

This book perfectly complements Embroideries and Patterns from 19th Century Vienna, Serena's first publication concerning the Nowotny Collection. Like its counterpart, Animal Embroideries and Patterns surveys samplers, motifs and decorative patterns, but focuses solely on animal patterns.

The embroideries are perfectly reproduced in 221 flawless colour photographs and are accompanied by 24 technical drawings. These are printed on individual sheets (20 x 16 in/500 x 400 mm), enclosed in a separate envelope and shrink-wrapped with the book.

Raffaella Serena, an expert in, and collector of, all applied arts, has extensively researched petit-point and cross-stitch history for more than twenty years. Her interest in the applied arts led her to open the Bottega delle Arti Applicate in Milan where she holds embroidery classes. She is also the author of Embroideries and Patterns from 19th Century Vienna
208 pages, 221 color plates, 24 technical drawings (bound separately)

Creative Sampler Embroidery
by Caroline Vincent

Creative Sampler Embroidery takes a fresh approach to this traditional art. Using stitches and colors, it is full of ideas for capturing today’s world with a sampler, still using age-old designs but interpreting them with beautiful images and new techniques.
Topics covered include: · Stitches – the samplers are based around the favored cross-stitch, but other stitches are suggested to give embroideries a rich texture. · Color – the mixing and blending of colors to create a wide range of effects and a harmonious design. · Designs – a great variety of motifs are included from Suffolk sheep to sunflower, country house to cornstalk. · Composition – five larger projects are included. · Step-by-by instructions are given with threads to use on both Aida and Evenweave cloth.

Hardbound, 128 pages, fully illustrated with 210 color photographs and 82 easy-to-follow graphs. $40.00
