ARCHITECTURE FROM EARLY SAMPLERS:
Historic
Patterns for Counted Thread Embroidery
by Marsha Van Valin
The first book of its kind to be published, this collection of over one hundred charted reproductions of buildings from samplers and needlework of the seventeenth through the mid-nineteenth centuries fills a huge void in the body of sampler publications. It includes many photos of the finished projects, accurate colors noted for both DMC cotton and au ver a soie silk flosses, and covers a huge variety of architectural subjects. They range from the "Nonesuch Palaces" of seventeenth century stump and canvasworks, to Scottish "mystery mansions," to elegant Georgian, Adam, and neoclassical style houses from America and English samplers. Examples of structures embroidered at the schools of Mary Balch, Leah Bratten, Mrs. Ventham, and others, are included, along with buildings from Quaker samplers, and from works ranging from New England to Ohio. Softbound, 100 pages, well
illustrated, $26.00
