TWO SAMPLERS MADE BY
CATHERINE ELIZABETH BUCHANAN

Catherine Elizabeth Buchanan Catherine Elizabeth Buchanan

Catherine's samplers were made in 1796 (the simpler one) and 1798. The latter sampler features two verses with freehand stitched floral bands above a delightful scene depicting a gentleman standing on a dock extending a bouquet of flowers to a lady standing behind the Dutch door of a brick cottage, surrounded by a body of water with swans, a ship, and a small village on a distant island. Stitches used include cross, tent, stem, satin, back, and bullion. Both samplers have been conserved and archivally mounted but are not framed. Catherine's more ambitious sampler, made in 1798 when she was twelve years old, measures 13" x 17-1/2". The verses are as follows:

From all that dwell below the skies
Let the Creator's praise arise
Let the Redeemer's Name be Sung
Thro every Land by every Tongue
Eternal are thy Mercies Lord
Eternal Truth attends thy Word
Thy Praise shall sound from Shore to Shore
Till Suns shall rise and set no more.

Yonder comes the Powerful king
of day: Rejoicing in the east.
Together let us tread
The morning dews and gather
in their Prime: Fresh blooming
flowers

The samplers are being sold as a pair. $1350

Catherine Buchanan's first sampler, again stitched in 1796 when she was ten years old, begins with sectionalized letters of the alphabet, numerals, trees, potted plants, flowers, and two verses. Stitches used are cross and petit point, silk on tammy. The tammy (fine wool) ground has suffered losses, but both samplers have been conserved and remounted. The verses on her first sampler are:

HAPPY THE CHILD WHO
FEARS THE LORD
LOVES HIS WAYS AND READS
HIS WORD INSTRUCTED
EARLY IN HIS PRAISE WHO
PARDONS SIN AND SAVES
BY GRACE

Religion is the chief concern
Of Mortals here below
May I its great Importance Learn
Its sovereign virtue know

This sampler also measures 13" x 17-1/2".
