MARY PLATT 1835
This unusual English memorial sampler features a chapel and a churchyard, and an
elegy to Mary's deceased father. The sampler is worked with fine wools and silk,
entirely in cross stitch, and is framed in an old black ebonized wood frame with
a gilt liner. The color is very good, but there is some staining probably from
having been glued to a cardboard backing. At the time it was framed, the edges
were turned under, so part of the design on the left and right sides is no
longer visible. The verse reads as follows:
IN MEMORY OF AN AFFECTIONATE FATHER WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE JUNE 12th 1835 IN THE
45TH YEAR OF HIS AGE...
Ah is it true and is my father dead
Are all the charms with his sweet spirit fled
And do those cheeks where rosy hues did play
Exhibit nought but cold and lifeless clay
All all is true no one his life could save
And now he lies within his silent grave
Lamented by the good and every friend
Who griev'd sincerely when they saw
His end in Providence Chapel Yard
His laid his corps where many a
Friend shall stand in deep remorse
While from each eye shall start the
Rolling tear of deep respect
His Memory to Revere.
The condition is fair, with minor stitch loss to the chapel and verse. The
colors are good and strong with no noticeable fading. 22.5" x 17", $850
