ELIZABETH MITCHELL 1828

This American Quaker sampler was probably made in Pennsylvania. It is worked with silk on linen, dated 1828, with the text "Elizabeth Mitchell's Work aged thirteen years" surrounded by apposing flower and leafy vines crowned by facing birds. Typical Quaker motifs include eight point stars, a basket, bunches of grapes and naturalistic flower motifs, all bordered by an angular bud and leaf design. Colors used are several shades of green, gold, ivory, brown, peach and black. Descended with the history of being made by Elizabeth Mitchell Leedom in the Leedom family of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The 1850, 1860, and 1870 census for Newtown Township in Delaware County list an Elizabeth Leedom, born in Pennsylvania around 1815, and her husband, Jesse, a well-to-do farmer and their five children. Some fading, one stain on the right border near the center, has not yet been cleaned and conserved, 17" h x 19" w, $2950
