MARGARET LOGAN
England, circa 1825

Margaret Logan's pictorial sampler displays an excellent composition which incorporates a fine house and garden scene with many sampler motifs and beautifully stitched lettering. The house sits on an interesting lawn with two distinct paths and a pair of leafy trees, with birds nestled into the branches. Additionally two enormous and wonderfully shaded roses flank the scene, with a dog, an owl and a pair of blue-bell flowers worked to provide further decoration. Lions, birds, stars, baskets of fruit, pots of flowers and trees also were worked onto this sampler.
Margaret Logan, aged 11, include a classic Quaker motif in the center of her sampler, the pair of birds on a stylized branch in an octagonal enclosure. The verse was very popular in the early 19th century and appears on samplers made throughout England and the United States. This sampler descended along with two handwritten family letters which are poems written by Margaret's sister on the occasion of her wedding and these letters remain with the sampler.
Worked in silk on wool it is in very good condition with some areas of very minor loss to the wool and a few stitches are missing from the corner of the house. It has been conservation mounted into a bird's eye maple frame.
Sampler size 19" x 20"  $2900
