1833 Silkwork Sampler by Matilda Ann Charles. Framed in a modern maple frame with gilt slip and glass. Stitched over card dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours dark green, cream, light brown, gold and pink.

Verse reads 'And the Lord> God Comman> ded the man> Saying of ev> ery tree of> the garden> thou mayest> freely eat> But of the> tree of the> Knowledge> of Good and> evil thous> halt not ea> t of it For in> the day tha> t Thou eat> est there of tho> u shalt surely> die'. Signed 'Matilda ann Charles Born June 2nd 1819 Aged 14'.

A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, a dog, birds, stags, flowers and thistles

Generally Fair. A number of holes, and losses to the ground. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing very slight wear, and has no backing. Otherwise it is sound and could be hung 'as is'.
